Rufus and Get Happy
Tuesday was an evening to remember, a friend and I went to the historic Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles to see Rufus Wainwright in concert. The architectural beauty of this theatre is beyond astonishing to me.
On some level, I suppose we could be considered stalkers of Rufus as we see him most anytime is playing in town.
We started the evening with a few drinks and nibbly things at Opus bar. We noticed a few guys around us dressed in Cirque du Soleil like clothing. stripped pants and some bright clothing. After we made it to our seats we noticed all the guys in the bright clothing were on stage with instruments. They were the band for Rufus.
On our way into the concert we noticed many pretty boys with girls. I thought, "few things in life can come between a queen and her fruit fly."
The Concert was great, he played many of our favorite songs. Then he said good night. The band played on as Rufus left the stage. One by one the band members dismissed themselves. I mentioned to my friend that I hoped he would do "Get Happy" from his Judy Garland concert. We said, "you know, a set of black pumps can be slipped on in a moment." We all did the applaud / wave cell phones. After a time had passed Rufus came back out on stage in a big fluffy white robe. Sat at the piano and sang a few songs.
Rufus then sat in a chair at the front of the stage and slowly started pulling jewelry from his robe pockets and putting rings on his fingers and ears. Then he slipped on a pair of black pumps, the crowd the roared as he very slowly put on his lipstick and dawned his fedora. Off came the robe to reveal his waist coat and pantyhose. Now, he was in full drag to perform "Get Happy."
One of my favorite quotes from the evening is . . . "I decided to use the American flag, because it has never been used before! Ha! The black stripes represent all that is wrong. The broaches represent all that is right. I am poor because I am constantly buying broaches." - Rufus Wainwright

Glad to hear that you had a great time with the concert and that he did not disappoint by not playing "Get Happy." Thanks for sharing!
We just saw him in Sydney where the finale was the same as you described. He performed here in the State Theatre, an historic movie house with beautiful decor. My posting on his concert also featured pics of the theatre, lol. Great minds think alike!
